There are literally miles and miles of river and creek fishing here at the Red Deer River Ranch, and for those looking for more adventure try one of our customized helicopter fly fishing trips to Lost Guide Lake just outside the boundary of Banff National Park in our Canadian Rocky Mountains. The upper Red Deer River has become a fairly good sportfishing river in the last 10 years as Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Bull Trout, and Mountain Whitefish seem to be migrating up from the Dickson dam to the east of us. You can walk out the door of your cabin and have the possibility of catching a 15"-20" Brown or Bull trout within a few minutes walking distance on the William's Creek. Just less than a mile away our private land is bordered by the Red Deer River where you will find quite a few good holes. Early May is a good time to be on the river, before the glacial melt and snow pack comes down. Late June to October provides clearer water for both angling and fly fishing on this typical Rocky Mountain river.
The first week of July is when the ice comes off of Lost Guide Lake and the fish are ravenous. This small mountain lake is located at the treeline and is right on the boundary of Banff National Park. It is stocked with lots of small to medium sized Cut Throat Trout. The helicopter picks you up just outside your cabin at the ranch and it is a 25 minute helicopter ride over the Rocky Mountains to a fishing spot that is great for novice and intermediate fly fishers. Even for the experienced fisherman, it is an awesome site, to fly over the mountains and see Big Horn Sheep, Mountain Goats, and Elk grazing the high country and then catch all the fish you want in this well stocked lake.
